Not everything you buy overseas can be brought home to Singapore
Consumers should buy medical device(s) only if they are authorised for supply and are from reputable / known dealers in Singapore. Among other safeguards taken for such authorised devices sold in Singapore, HSA conducts post–market activities, including the monitoring of adverse events to help consumers ensure the safety, quality and performance of these medical devices.
In consideration of special circumstances where individuals may require import of medical device(s) for personal medical conditions, it is provided in law that personal imports are allowed but restricted to a 3-month supply. The Health Products (Medical Device) Regulations pertaining to personal import of medical device(s) can be referenced here.
Individuals who need to import ‘Professional-Use Only'* medical devices for their personal use are required to produce a letter from a qualified practitioner (doctor / dentist) confirming and justifying such need, and clearance will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
* NOTE: Professional-Use Only medical device, means a medical device that is to be used on an individual solely by, or under the supervision of, a qualified practitioner.
The following are not allowed as personal imports:
(a)HIV test kits or irradiating (ionising and non-ionising) apparatus (eg. X-rays, lasers, ultrasound) which is subject to control under the Radiation Protection Act as administered by the Radiation Protection & Nuclear Science Department of the National Environment Agency;
(b)Multiple repeat shipments of the same medical device(s) within short periods of time (<3 months), or information/content related to the shipment that cause the Authority to believe that the supply is not intended for personal use.
To facilitate import clearance, please download the application form and submit the completed form with the necessary supporting documents at least 10 working days before the arrival date of the medical device(s) in Singapore via:
• Email:HSA_MD_SA@hsa.gov.sg or
• Fax: (65) 6478 9028
Please obtain the necessary approvals for the import of medical devices for personal use, before commencing travel. You are not required to declare your medical devices on your arrival in Singapore. However, as Customs Officers may perform routine checks, please have all the supporting documents and the approved acknowledgement email for the import of medical devices for personal use, ready with you for inspection when requested. The documents should be kept with you throughout your stay in Singapore and kindly bring the medical devices with you when you leave Singapore.
NOTE: Personal import notifications are not required for persons travelling with medical devices that have been surgically implanted or if the medical device is already in use at time of travel. Travellers can bring in up to 3 months supply of medical devices for their personal use.
