When Do We Reach Out?

Reaching out for support is a sign of strength. Talking to someone about our problems can help bring relief, help us feel better and improve our mental well-being because there are times when our problems could be too much for us to take on our own. It can also help us see things from a different perspective and strengthen our resilience over time. Here are 4 common signs we need to reach out for support:

When we experience tough emotions often

Are you more anxious, irritable, angry and overwhelmed more than usual? Do you find yourself emotionally overreacting to situations? If we are not able to manage them well, these difficult emotions can disrupt our daily life and make it difficult for us to function day-to-day.

When we start having negative thoughts

Do you find yourself taking things personally, interpreting most situations negatively, feeling confused often or having irrational thoughts? Negative thoughts create feelings of fear, worry and stress. They can affect our ability to relax, take things easy and enjoy life.

When we feel our behaviour changing

Are you more withdrawn than usual and avoiding social interactions? Are you not enjoying hobbies or interests as much as you used to? Do you find it difficult to concentrate or engaging in unhealthy behaviours to cope (e.g. reliance on tobacco or caffeine)? These changes in behaviour are signs you might need to reach out.

When our physical health is getting affected

Do you feel more tired than usual? Are you having frequent headaches, migraines, muscle tension and digestive issues? Are you having trouble with sleep? These are all signs that our physical health is affected by our mental well-being.

How to Better Support Others

Sometimes we are unsure of how to support the people we care about as they try to overcome life’s challenges. They may start acting differently, or show signs that they are struggling to cope. Here’s to empowering you with the tools to reach out with empathy and provide them with the support they need.
